New location for infrastructure expansion in the state capital Munich

REMEX takes over operational responsibility for the Munich site on Zamdorfer Straße

In November, Munich City Council is discussing the Bavarian capital's circular economy strategy, a comprehensive set of measures that also focuses on resource conservation and reuse in the construction industry. REMEX GmbH considers itself well equipped to address both issues. In October, it took over operational responsibility for an additional site in Munich. The aim is to meet the high demand for mineral waste management from large-scale projects in and around Munich.

Second intermediary storage facility for construction waste

The new REMEX facility is located in the east of Munich, around 4 km from the city centre, on the border between the districts of Bogenhausen and Zamdorf. The 9,558 m² site, which is intended as an interim storage facility, has eight storage boxes, two basins and a spacious open-air storage area – providing sufficient space for the separate storage of numerous different material flows. Waste from the construction sector in particular, such as soil and stones, building rubble, concrete, bricks, bitumen mixtures and sludge, is to be collected at the new site, properly declared and finally recycled.

Ideal location for handling excavated material from Munich’s S-Bahn expansion

The Munich S-Bahn is one of the most important suburban rail systems in Germany. As part of capacity expansion, a second main line is currently being built. The centrepiece of the 11-kilometre line is a 7-kilometre tunnel. “This is one of Munich’s largest infrastructure projects, generating very large quantities of excavated material,’ explains Sophie Kloepfer, Regional Manager South-East, adding, ‘With our locations, we are ideally positioned to support the S-Bahn project and ensure the sustainable and rapid disposal of the excavated material.”

Munich hub

Already in July last year, the Southeast regional team of REMEX expanded its recycling activities by acquiring 5,000 m² of storage and transhipment space in Munich-Aubing. Located around 17 km from the city centre and with its own rail connection, the Aubing facility is particularly interesting from a logistical point of view, as it allows goods to be received and transported by block trains or individual wagons. This not only reduces truck traffic in the city, but also enables ecologically and economically optimised onward transport by train to recycling plants and landfills within and outside Bavaria.

The Biburg remediation centre, located approximately 90 km north of Munich, has also been part of the REMEX Group since last year – an important location when it comes to materials stemming from remediation sites. The facility has a special feature in the REMEX portfolio: the washing plant can treat contaminated soil, track ballast and construction waste. A dry mechanical and a biological treatment plant on the site and additional storage capacity supplement the range of services.

Management of Bavarian activities

Since opening its first sales office five years ago, the southernmost of the REMEX regions has developed rapidly. With a total of seven locations in Bavaria, the region considers itself well positioned to master the challenges posed by special material flows. There are plenty of references, from waste disposal activities for Bavaria’s largest refinery company to extensive deliveries of replacement building materials to secure the Eisert landfill site. This commitment is now being complemented by the Munich facility.
