New plant in Bavaria

REMEX has been present in Biburg, Bavaria, since February with a new facility. The site near Ingolstadt, which among other things is equipped with a washing plant for soil treatment, is already making its mark within the group of companies thanks to this unique selling point.

Biburg is the fourth site in the up-and-coming REMEX region in southern Germany and is licensed to accept both hazardous and non-hazardous waste. The focus is on soil and construction waste, for which comprehensive technical equipment is available on site for acceptance, temporary storage and recycling. The 35,000 m2 site offers ideal conditions for dry and wet mechanical treatment, as well as the appropriate infrastructure for biological processes.

Like many other German federal states, Bavaria urgently needs adequate disposal routes for contaminated waste.

Launch under the REMEX brand

REMEX GmbH acquired the Biburg facility in February of this year and, in the months that followed, adapted it to the group’s standards through structural and operational measures. The investments included technical upgrades to the recycling plant, the halls and the site. Around 35,000 tonnes of old gravel, which were taken over as stock, have now been processed and the material can be used as an aggregate in the production of asphalt. At the same time, the new facility had to be established on the market under REMEX’s management. Against this backdrop, another sales office was opened in Holzkirchen in September, with a total of four colleagues joining the regional REMEX sales team.

“As a local partner in an important metropolitan area, we offer attractive waste disposal options to the Bavarian economy. The projects of recent months confirm the demand for our services and raise REMEX’s profile among important new customers.”

Nico Deis, Site Manager Biburg

Added disposal options for local companies

Bavarian landfill capacities are very limited, especially for mineral waste with contamination levels above landfill classes 0 and I. With its Biburg plant, REMEX offers local disposal options for a wide range of precisely this type of waste. For materials that cannot be recycled or disposed of here, customers can access the resources of the REMEX group of companies thanks to the site’s integration into the REMEX network. This includes underground recovery options in salt mines or the underground disposal of hazardous waste. This provides companies in the Nuremberg, Regensburg, Augsburg and Munich regions with secure disposal channels and a significant increase in disposal options.

“In addition to recyclable materials, we can accept and temporarily store numerous other types of waste in Biburg. This gives our customers access to the entire REMEX network’s output channels – right through to secure underground disposal.”

Sophie Kloepfer, Regional Manager

Environmentally friendly logistics instead of long waste transports

In addition to the advantages in terms of the range of materials accepted, Biburg’s central location offers great potential for optimisation of logistics and environmental protection. Customers’ disposal routes are significantly shorter, and transports to other federal states are often no longer necessary. In addition, REMEX Biburg also relies on traffic-reducing, environmentally friendly logistics processes. For example, construction materials for sealing the former Eisert landfill site are currently being produced at the new location. The construction materials are transported to Hesse’s largest unsecured landfill site by ship, which is a plus for the project’s carbon footprint.

At the new REMEX site in Biburg, it is possible to process waste with contamination levels higher than DK III.

Washing plant for soil treatment

A future-oriented feature of the facility is its physical-chemical washing plant. Until now, it has been used primarily for processing track ballast. Following the renovations carried out in the summer, the enclosed plant can now also be used to treat contaminated soil. Initial test runs have already been successfully completed and have shown that it is possible in Biburg to process heavily contaminated soil from remediation measures into quality-assured aggregates. The soil treatment washing plant is the first of its kind in the REMEX Group and gives the facility in Bavaria a unique selling point. The demand for this type of soil treatment is already very high and will continue to rise in the future. The prospects are therefore good for sustainable cooperation between the Bavarian economy and REMEX as mineral and recycling experts.

REMEX South-East is the newest region in the group of companies. Since October 2022, the Munich regional team has been expanding its customer base and network of locations in Bavaria. In the course of 2024, the Biburg production facility, a storage site in Aubing and a sales office in Holzkirchen were added. More about the region on remex-suedost.de
