Extended operating permit
Already last summer, the Düsseldorf-based REMEX Group started operating a construction waste processing plant and a household waste handling facility on its site in Hilden. In June 2025, REMEX received approval for extension of activities. On that basis, the company has now added the treatment, storage and handling of AMF waste in the designated hall. This waste mainly takes the form of insulation materials. Compaction means that it takes up significantly less space when subsequently deposited in landfills, optimising the use of landfill capacity in terms of resource conservation.
“Until now, AFM waste from Düsseldorf and the surrounding region was deposited untreated at the Hubbelrath central landfill site. Compacting this waste significantly reduces its volume. This means that less landfill space is used, making operations more sustainable.”
Jörg Piepers, Managing Director Zentraldeponie Hubbelrath GmbH
Preliminary construction for rapid commissioning
Around €1.5 million was invested in the technology, which reduces the volume of the delivered AMF waste by a factor of 3 to 4 with a pressing force of 120 tonnes. This process line, with a capacity of up to 20 tonnes per hour, was prefabricated by the manufacturer within three months. After successful functional testing, it was transported in individual elements to Hilden,
where it was assembled within two weeks in July 2021. The plant is located in a section of the 2,500 m² hall, which has been used for household waste handling since last year. In anticipation of the expansion, appropriate structural measures were already implemented, such as a wall opening for the discharge of the finished foil-wrapped bales from the hall.
High safety requirements
Artificial mineral fibre waste, which is mainly produced as part of energy-efficiency measures during renovation work on older buildings, is often hazardous waste. Its storage and treatment is subject to extensive legal requirements. The challenges of operation are therefore not limited to the functionality of the compacting and foiling. Particular attention must be paid to occupational safety requirements and the associated installation of numerous safety devices. These include, for example, extraction and filter technology, which prevents the uncontrolled release of fibres, as well as several automatic safety systems. All of these are essential for operation in compliance with the legal regulations.
Regional recycling centre for three material flows
With the official commissioning of the third operating unit in Hilden on 4 August 2025, the Group has created an important hub for the region and industry. With immediate effect, the most significant waste streams in terms of volume – soil, construction and demolition waste, road rubble, household and bulky waste, and KMF waste from the greater Düsseldorf area – can now be disposed of locally.
Acceptance and processing of mineral construction waste
Transhipment of household and bulky waste
Interim storage and treatment of AMF waste
“With the new AMF treatment plant, we have created an important new waste management option for the construction industry. In combination with the two other operating units, this centre in Hilden is unique in the region.”
Stephan Böcker, Regional Area Manager Rhineland
