695,000 tonnes of sustainable construction materials for the Eisert landfill site

Completion of material deliveries for profiling the old deposit site

Düsseldorf, 15.12.2025 – After around three years of construction, a milestone has now been reached in securing the central disposal area of the former Eisert landfill site: with 695,000 tonnes of secondary aggregates from REMEX, the profiling of the old landfill site can now be completed over an area of around 60,000 m².

The measure is part of a comprehensive safety concept, which is being managed by HIM AG, Contaminated Site Remediation Division HIM-ASG. In the course of the remediation, the former landfill area will be completely encapsulated. The profiling that has now been completed creates a permanent slope on the landfill surface so that surface water can be drained in a targeted manner.

ZECH Umwelt GmbH is responsible for constructing the landfill profile, while REMEX is supplying the materials. The collaboration began in 2023, when HIM-ASG put the first construction phase out to tender across Europe. Even then, it was clear how large the project would be – the first construction phase alone involved 220,000 tonnes. Together with the quantities from subsequent years, the demand for landfill replacement materials of landfill class I totalled 695,000 tonnes. Due to the scale of the project, most of the deliveries were made by ship and coordinated on a cross-regional basis from Hesse, Bavaria, Baden-Württemberg and Rhineland-Palatinate.

In the coming years, surface sealing and vertical sealing elements will be constructed as part of the Eisert remediation concept. The aim is to permanently protect groundwater and surface water from negative impacts from the old site.
