AUREC: processing capacity increased by around 70 %

REMEX affiliated company sets the course for the future in Bernburg

Düsseldorf, 22 November 2024 – The specialist for the production of stowage materials, the AUREC Gesellschaft für Abfallverwertung und Recycling mbH, has significantly expanded its capacity. In Bernburg, Saxony-Anhalt, the company can now process around 350,000 tonnes of material per year. This represents an increase of almost 70 % on the site’s previous capacity of 210,000 tonnes per year. All in all, AUREC has invested more than €16 million in the expansion and optimisation of the site.

AUREC is a subsidiary of REKS GmbH & Co. KG, a joint venture between REMEX and K+S. The stowage materials produced in Bernburg are delivered directly to the neighbouring K+S salt mine. Installed in disused sections of the mine, they fill cavities and counteract the settling of the rock.

AUREC makes use of mineral waste such as soil from remediation measures, filter dust, fly ash, slag and ash, as well as sludge and sand from industrial processes to produce underground stowage materials. The raw material is processed in accordance with tested and approved recipes under strictly regulated conditions. From a sustainability perspective, underground recovery replaces natural resouces which otherwise would have to be used for the backfilling of disused mine areas at risk of subsidence. Furthermore, the use of mineral waste for stowage conserves the limited landfill space available for mineral waste.

As part of its future-orientated capacity expansion, AUREC constructed additional hall space in Bernburg for the reception and storage of bulk materials. The construction of three additional silos also increased capacity for pneumatically conveyable materials such as flue gas cleaning residues from waste incineration plants. At the same time, the plant and conveyor technology at the site was upgraded and the infrastructure of the site was renewed. Dr Robert Wermuth, Managing Director of AUREC: “We have been processing mineral waste for the production of underground stowage materials at the Bernburg site since 1992. The investments in the expansion underline our commitment to the highest production standards and at the same time create new opportunities for the sustainable combination of mining safety and disposal reliability.”
