New transport solution for asbestos waste
With the introduction of reusable barrels this year, REMEX is launching a completely new method of transporting waste safely from the construction site to the disposal facility. The barrels have a capacity of around 30 litres, can be stacked on pallets and are sealed for transport. The Basel plant has been converted to accommodate the reception, storage and cleaning of these containers, which has also helped to optimise the overall process. “Our service is free of charge and works as a deposit system. The Basel plant was converted accordingly for the acceptance, storage and cleaning of the barrels, which also contributed to the optimisation of the overall process”, explains Björn Brecht, who has been in charge of the asbestos facility since May 2022.
To date, it has been common practice to prepare asbestos-containing waste for disposal in double airtight big bags. Once they arrive at the treatment plant, the big bags are cut open in the remediation zone, emptied and cleaned in the process. Together with the combustible materials that are sorted out during the treatment of the asbestos waste, the big bag material is classified as containing low levels of asbestos and is then sent to the waste incineration plant for thermal treatment.

Controlled and safe acceptance
Transport inside the processing plant by crane
Emptying the barrel above the grate
Simple process integrated cleaning of the barrels
Securing the barrels for transport and reuse
Relevant savings in big bag material
One pallet with 20 barrels corresponds to around two big bags
Advantages of reusable barrels
Eliminating big bags not only reduces the amount of waste to be incinerated, but also saves business partners the cost of purchasing big bags and allows them to benefit from less injury-prone handling in the remediation zone of the construction site and simplified transport on pallets. REMEX Switzerland is pleased with the barrel introduction: “The new packaging method has been well received from the outset, and we are seeing a steadily growing number of enquiries. The remediation companies attest to the positive effects, with occupational safety being a particularly convincing argument”, summarises Oliver Mickley, Managing Director REMEX Recycling AG.
“We are convinced that in future, reusable barrels will become indispensable in asbestos removal.”
