Implementation under the leadership of HIM-ASG
The Eisert landfill site, the largest unsecured landfill site in Hesse, covers an area of over 60,000 m². Until 1978, untreated household and industrial waste was deposited in the former gravel pit. Its remediation is the responsibility of HIM GmbH, the central remediation agency of the state of Hesse. The task, which falls within the remit of the contaminated site remediation department (HIM-ASG), involves planning and implementing safety measures to protect groundwater and surrounding surface waters.
Creation of a new profile
The focus of the measure was on landfill profiling. This creates a permanent slope so that surface water can be drained away in a targeted manner. The scale of the project was clear from the very first tender – the first construction phase alone involved 220,000 tonnes of landfill construction materials. A contract that is anything but commonplace in the industry and could only be fulfilled through cooperation between the three southern REMEX regions.
Three years of construction
We first reported on the remediation project and the planned encapsulation of the old site in Hesse in 2023. A total of three construction lots have been put out to tender across Europe since the start of the project. Zech Umwelt GmbH was awarded the contract for construction work and REMEX for material supply three times in a row. The annual delivery period from April to December was mandatory. In line with the construction progress, material delivery had to be as continuous as possible. Most of the weekly deliveries of around 5,000 tonnes were made by ship.
A detailed monitoring and approval process was carried out throughout the entire project to ensure that the construction materials complied with the required classification values for landfill class I and the structural quality specifications. A total of 695,000 tonnes of material was provided in this way over the past three years. Logistically, this could only be achieved through close coordination and cross-border deliveries from REMEX sites in Hesse, Bavaria, Baden-Württemberg and Rhineland-Palatinate.

Outlook for 2026
With the profiling work now complete, the foundation has been laid for the next steps in the project. The planned diaphragm walls can be installed and construction of the surface sealing can begin. The tender for these measures is expected in 2026, and due to the complexity of the project, their implementation will again take several years. REMEX plans to continue its involvement in this major construction project. Based on its previous experience, the cross-regional team is determined to once again submit a viable and competitive bid.
With the profiling now complete, an important step has been taken towards securing the Eisert landfill site. We would like to thank everyone involved in the project for their excellent cooperation, without which such a large-scale project would not have been possible.
