A quick quiz

A quick quiz

With inclination, momentum and air – where do heavy and light metals end up on the air table when they are processed at our subsidiary Heros Sluiskil B.V.  Our Dutch company uses a density-based separation method that makes use of the law of inertia. The fine non-ferrous metal concentrates extracted from grate ash are fed over the air tables and swirled into the air by an air current not visible here, whilst the slightly inclined table oscillates at the same time: the heavy metals move upwards, the light metals downwards.

Particle sizes and shapes of recycled construction materials

Particle sizes and shapes of recycled construction materials

This is what it looks like when we test the particle size and shape of recycled aggregates. This step forms part of our in-house production control procedures at our recycling plants. As with external monitoring, this aspect of quality control for ssecondary construction materials must be carried out at defined intervals. All necessary parameters are tested and recorded as specified in the relevant technical regulations and the German Secondary Aggregate Directive.

Sampling for in-house production control

Sampling for in-house production control

Indispensable and standard practice for decades: the regular sampling and quality control of secondary aggregates as part of quality assurance. The material pile is meticulously prepared – in Germany in accordance with LAGA PN 98 – before aggregate samples are taken, which are then processed and analysed in the laboratory. The frequency and scope of in-house production control and external monitoring are determined by the technical and environmental regulations. If you would like to find out more about the German quality controll procedures we recommend our MEB Handbook on Secondary Aggregates. more

Control of particle size distribution

Control of particle size distribution

Currently, the particle size distribution of recycled aggregates is checked manually using a sieve tower. The aim is to automate this process during processing in future – that is what the research project KIMBA is about.

Ash in the WtE plant bunker

Ash in the WtE plant bunker

This is how the recycling of residues from the waste-to-energy (WtE) plant begins – with loading of the raw incinerator bottom ash (IBA) into the slag bunker. Once the material arrives at our facility, the metals and mineral components that IBA contains are processed so for later reuse as secondary raw materials in metal production and construction. Facts from the recycling plant

Facts from the recycling plant

Bottom ash from waste incineration contains approximately 7.7% by mass of scrap iron. One tonne of this reduces greenhouse gas emissions from metal production by 1.75 tonnes of CO₂ equivalent. What emerges from this processing is therefore a genuine contribution to climate protection – not greenwashing!
