Increased volume and construction of an additional DK-II section
Düsseldorf, 19.05.2026 – The Cologne District Government has granted approval for the modification and expansion of the Haus Forst landfill in Kerpen. On behalf of the permit holder – REMONDIS GmbH & Co. KG, Rhineland Region – REMEX GmbH, the company responsible for site management, has now successfully completed the planning approval process. The new planning approval decision secures long-term disposal capacity for DK-I and DK-II waste in North Rhine-Westphalia.
The plan involves a comprehensive reorganisation of the site and essentially includes increasing the landfill site capacity, constructing a landfill section for DK-II waste, and expanding the list of waste types to include hazardous waste. This package of measures will increase the originally approved landfill volume by 2.4 million m³ to 6.8 million m³. The total volume is distributed between approximately 3.5 million m³ for DK-I waste and 3.3 million m³ for DK-II waste. Assuming an unchanged annual delivery volume of approximately 300,000 tonnes of waste, the landfill’s operational life will thus be extended by approximately 13 years compared to the original plan, until 2057.
With the expansion of the Haus Forst landfill, the group is reaffirming its long-term commitment to North Rhine-Westphalia. Michael Stoll, Managing Director of REMEX GmbH, highlights the macroeconomic aspects of the investment project: “The future operation of two landfill classes at a single site will increase the efficiency and sustainability of waste management services in North Rhine-Westphalia. Given its proximity to the Benelux countries, the Kerpen infrastructure project has an international impact – with positive effects on the competitiveness of the entire region.”
The landfill in Kerpen serves as a model for the redevelopment of an old site. In 2016, REMEX applied to the Cologne District Government for the recommissioning of the Haus Forst landfill as a Class I landfill with a storage capacity of around 4.4 million m³. The plan was approved in 2018, and the Class I landfill for non-hazardous mineral waste has been in operation since 2020. To date, around 1.0 million m³ of waste has been deposited. As part of the strategic advancement of the site, a new application for planning approval was submitted to the Cologne District Government in May 2023.
To develop the newly approved sections, REMEX GmbH is once again relying on the successful ‘landfill-on-landfill’ design concept. In particular, the construction sector, industry and the commercial sector will benefit from the significantly broader range of mineral waste that can be accepted – both in the existing DK-I section and in the planned disposal area for Class II landfill waste. The development of the new landfill sections will take place whilst operations continue.
