At its first constituent meeting, the German Federal Association for Mineral Recycling and Sustainable Waste Management (BMKE), founded in February this year, set the course for its future work.
Michael Stoll, Managing Director of Düsseldorf-based REMEX GmbH, was elected Chairman of the Board. In the BMKE’s press release, he emphasises the strong signal sent out by the first general meeting and is convinced that professional exchange within the association is fundamental to tackling regulatory and technical challenges even more effectively together in the future.
He is supported in his role by Rebecca Winkler of AVEA GmbH & Co. KG, who was elected Deputy Chair of the Board representing the Incinerator Bottom Ash working group. Torsten Zuber of REKS GmbH & Co. KG was elected Deputy Chair of the Board for the working group on underground recovery and disposal.
“With this first general meeting, we are sending a strong signal regarding the collective representation of the interests of the mineral recycling industry.”

The meeting also defined the key focus areas for the three specialist groups that the association brings together under its roof.
- With reference to recycled construction materials, the relevant specialist group regards the swift implementation of an amendment to the German Secondary Aggregate Directive as its top priority. It will also advocate for a practical and nationally harmonised implementation of the European end-of-waste criteria.
- In the field of processing and recycling bottom ash from waste incineration, the association’s work will focus on opportunities for innovative and high-quality use of the materials. This potential should also be more strongly reflected in future regulations.
- The specialist group on underground recycling and disposal subjects is dedicated to technical standards, safety aspects and regulatory issues with the aim of securing long-term waste disposal structures for hazardous waste.
