Further development of REMEX’s gravel and sand quarry in Michendorf
Düsseldorf, 22.10.2026 – The Brandenburg State Office for the Environment (LfU) has granted REMEX GmbH approval for the construction and operation of the Fresdorfer Heide landfill site (in the municipality of Michendorf). The approval enables the company to repurpose the gravel and sand quarry, situated 15 km south of Potsdam, as a Class I landfill site.
The opencast mine in the Potsdam-Mittelmark district, which REMEX acquired in 2024, covers an area of around 62 ha. Gravel and sand have been extracted here for decades, and the extraction of raw materials has created extensive cavities. The LfU Brandenburg is now authorising the reclamation of parts of the open-cast site for use as a landfill site for low-contaminated, non-hazardous mineral construction waste from the region. Waste will be deposited exclusively on areas used for gravel and sand extraction which have already been released from mining supervision.
In Brandenburg and the Berlin metropolitan area, around 8.5 million tonnes of soil and construction waste are generated annually. The continued analysis of disposal demand carried out by u.e.c. Berlin in September 2022 on behalf of the LfU confirms the need for Class I mineral waste landfill sites. Stefan Roll, Regional Manager of the REMEX Berlin-Brandenburg region, explains: “Providing sufficient disposal capacity for non-recyclable mineral waste streams plays a key role in ensuring that disposal costs – and consequently construction costs – in the region remain stable and predictable.”
The plan for the Fresdorfer Heide landfill site provides for its construction and operation in three phases. A landfill capacity of around 2.7 million m³ will be created on a total disposal area of 17.2 ha within the opencast mining site. With an annual disposal volume of approximately 200,000 m³, this results in a landfill lifespan of 13.5 years. In parallel with this, further gravel and sand extraction will continue on the adjacent plots of land, at a rate of around 150,000 tonnes per year, and is expected to continue until 2040.
Stefan Roll: “The excellent accessibility via the A10 and A115 motorways and the use of our site’s existing infrastructure are among the major advantages of the location in Potsdam-Mittelmark. Combining gravel and sand extraction with landfill operations reduces empty journeys. Given current fuel prices and the targets for greater climate protection, this is a decisive argument in favour of the Fresdorfer Heide landfill site.”
