Redevelopment of the steelworks brownfield site in Talange

REMEX France supplies bottom ash for new recycling platform

In Talange in the French department of Moselle, a site complex that was formerly used for steel production by ThyssenKrupp has been undergoing remediation for many years. A part of the project has now been successfully completed in cooperation with the French REMEX RESSOURCES MINÉRALES (RRM).

The overall project, which is being managed by developer Zone Industrielle du Port (ZIP), involves the redevelopment of around 85 hectares of brownfield land between Talange and Hagondange. With its strategic location close to the A4 and A31 motorways and the planned connection to the rail network, the site near Metz has great economic development potential. ZIP is coordinating the redevelopment projects, focusing on transforming the area for sustainable future use, including creating space for green energy production and recycling.

Subproject with RRM

As part of the site revitalisation, a new recycling platform for granulates and waste wood is being created. From the outset, the consistent use of secondary raw materials was planned. The project managers opted for incinerator bottom ash (IBA) aggregates with a grading curve of 4 to 50 mm as construction material for the substructure.

Material according to SETRA guidelines

Over a period of two years, from November 2023 to the end of 2025, a total of 44,000 tonnes of IBA was installed in several construction phases. The material comes from the REMEX SüdWest GmbH plant in Mannheim. The installation as a Type 1 application and the quality control were carried out in accordance with the SÉTRA regulations prescribed in France, ‘Acceptabilité environnementale de matériaux alternatifs en technique routière, les mâchefers d’incinération de déchets non dangereux (MIDND)’, which regulates the environmental compatibility of alternative materials in road construction. The notification, logistical coordination between production and the construction site, and regular technical and chemical material testing were all part of the contract with ZIP.

Objective: national concept

With the successful completion of the project, REMEX has demonstrated that it has the knowledge and experience to process IBA from Energy-from-Waste plants in accordance with French quality requirements. RRM is now working on a solution for processing French RDF ash directly in France in the medium term and making it available to the local construction industry as a quality-controlled substitute building material. A plant such as that of REMEX subsidiary HEROS, whose processing techniques even enable bottom as to be reused in concrete, could serve as a model.
