A key railway line for North Rhine-Westphalia
The section between Hagen and Cologne is one of the most important local and long-distance rail routes in North Rhine-Westphalia. Regional and intercity trains run at frequent intervals. With this comprehensive refurbishment, Deutsche Bahn is bringing together numerous works along the line – some of which have been in the pipeline for a long time. These include the renewal of tracks, switch points and overhead lines, as well as improvements to accessibility, noise protection and the refurbishment and modernisation of stations.
Three current projects with REMEX
The stations being refurbished along the route include Leverkusen-Manfort, Haan and Haan-Gruiten. These construction works generate significant quantities of excavated soil and demolition materials, consisting largely of non-hazardous soil, concrete, construction waste and asphalt. This is where REMEX comes in. Managed from its Cologne site, the company manages the material flow at all three locations and transports the resulting waste to the group’s own recycling plants in Hilden or Cologne for further processing.
Efficient and environmentally sound disposal
There are many thousands of tonnes of mineral waste around the three stations in need of refurbishment. In infrastructure projects of this kind, the systematic on-site separation and subsequent professional removal and processing of the resulting mineral materials are essential components of successful completion. With its expertise, REMEX helps to ensure that the demolition is carried out in an environmentally sound manner through high reuse rates. This is not only beneficial for the renewal of the railway infrastructure, but also ensures the continued development of a sustainable public transport system in Germany’s most populous federal state.
The refurbishment projects on the Hagen–Cologne railway line serve as a prime example of the importance of close coordination between infrastructure and recycling companies for the comprehensive refurbishment of the German rail network.
